You’ve heard of Throw Back Thursday? Well, this November, each Friday is Never Forget Friday. November is a month to remember and give thanks for all who have touched our hearts, and in our case, our beloved cats.

I’ll be sharing some stories of some cats from the past that may be gone, but still remain in our hearts. I invite you all to share memories of cats that have come through your lives and hearts. Sharing stories is one of the gifts we can share as people. Sharing stories of those who have touched our hearts is a gift we give to ourselves and each other.

Here is one story of a very special cat who touched so many hearts including mine.

It was early May, 2012 and this cat, who’s age was never really known, was simply put as old enough to have seen it all.

Some people go about their days and watch the world go by, yet see very little. Then there are others who, regardless of what they are doing can spot someone in need a mile away. Thank goodness, and thank God, the volunteers of FFRC have that special radar where they sense a cat in need and can pick it out from a distance.

Out for a daily run, Jennifer C, FFRC photographer and volunteer who brings the faces of our beloved cats into our focus spotted what she thought looked like a young black cat off in the distance. Most people wouldn’t have spotted her, some who did might have just kept on running, but not a FFRC volunteer, so Jen slowed down and made her way to the cat, who did not run away.

She spoke softly to the cat, called her husband and said “come pick me up and bring a cat carrier.” Spouses of volunteers know when that call comes, they best be on their way and do as told.

Jen was able to get the cat to come closer to her and picked her up. It was at that moment she realized this was not a kitten, but an adult cat that was little more than skin and bones.

Jen and her husband rushed her to FFRC and Jacci immediately began treating her and bathed her. She weighed less than 5 lbs. Jacci told Jen that it is rare you are able to put your hand around the mid-section of a cat and feel its organs. Neither of them was sure this cat would survive. She was severely dehydrated and much too dehydrated to even be tested. But that wasn’t even a concern at that point. The more immediate concern would be would she make it through the night.

Fluids and care were given and Jacci was able to test later the next day. While the tests were negative, her future was still in doubt as she was fragile, malnourished and still dehydrated. Knowing it was a miracle she was still hanging on, Jen asked Jacci if she could name her Bondi. Bondi is a type of sweat band that Jen wears when running (Bondi Bands) and just as Jen gets strength from her running, she knew this sweet girl needed as much strength as possible to survive.

And survive she did. She spent most of her first few months in Dodgers Pen, using the stairs a web cammer had donated to climb in and out when she wanted. As she gained strength and would make her way around the Center, something became very clear about this old girl; other cats were not to her liking. She would growl and hiss and generally made it clear to all, “get out of my way or you will feel my wrath.” So one day she made her way to the Welcome room, found a heated bed she liked and the transformation in her personality was amazing. She was happy and stress free! She had found her home.

Bondi had good days and bad days. Sometimes she had trouble eating, but through love and compassion she lived the lap of luxury, courtesy of all the volunteers. A caring web cam couple from ‘across the pond’ would send these licking treat things, renamed Bondi Licks, that Bondi loved to lick and lick and lick.

When Jen would come she would always greet her “Bondi girl” and give her a big hug, kisses and lots of love.

She knew it was a miracle for each day Bondi had with us and we know it is a miracle that FFRC exists and all its volunteers have that special “radar” that finds those in need and knows just where to bring them.

Eyes guided by love found her that day in May, 2012. Hands guided by compassion restored her to a place of meaning. And each day since her eyes, her skin, her bones, her whole being had been transformed and then it transcended.

She is now free to run and play and knows no sadness. And years later I do not cry for her, I smile. I smile because I know the path that led her here. I smile because I was blessed to know her , humbled to watch her and graced knowing she was lost and then was found. She was alone and then was engulfed by love.
And know this, sweet Bondi girl; your paw prints have forever left their mark on our hearts and our soul.

On Monday April 15, 2013, our Dear Sweet Bondi girl said her final goodbye. She passed away peacefully while being held. We had her for only a short time, but we witnessed her transform from a barely recognizable cat to a wonderful member of our FFRC family, one who will always be in our hearts. She died the same day two other special cats passed; Orangey, a much loved Barnie and Heaven, a cat we had only a short time but who touched many of us dearly. Bondi also died on a day that we in Boston remember for both tragedy and triumph, much like how our Bondi girl was transformed. It is a day we remember not for the sadness but for the inevitability of perseverance because of love.

Our Bondi girl: We could never forget her, not on this Friday, any Friday or any day.

This is a story of a special cat that wasn’t with us long, but long enough to touch our hearts.

It was Friday, January 20, 2012. Jacci was asked by friend if she could take in a special, sweet boy. No one knew how far he had traveled, only he knew the story of how he got where he got, and he didn’t feel like talking, he justed wanted to be loved.

So on that Friday, this sweet, special boy came to FFRC, embraced with loving arms. He had been found that day when a big semi-truck arrived at a local Meijers store to deliver merchandise. When he got on the truck and where he got on, only he knew. It was a long-distance hauling truck. None of it mattered, all that mattered was that he was now in the loving hands of FFRC. He was named Sesame.

He appeared to be about 10 years old and during a vet check a few days later, that was what the Dr. thought as well. Aging a cat can be a challenge, but teeth, whiskers and a few other factors can narrow it down. When we got to see him on cam, many of us took a double take as he looked a lot like our dear Tonio whom many of us loved dearly. Just like Tonio, Sesame was a Siamese mix. Anyone who held him said the same thing, he just felt like mush, nuzzling and trying to suck on everyone’s shirt.

This cat who had such a story to tell, just wanted to be loved. He just wanted to forget the cold, giant truck that somehow he found himself imprisoned in. He just wanted a hug, he just wanted to have someone tell him, “You’re home, you’re safe and you are so very much loved.”

And love him Jacci did. Love him the volunteers all did. And love him we cammers all did. It was hard not to. He simply demanded it by simply being himself.

During his time at FFRC the big floor installation took place. Sesame and his new family of cats were all put in the back room for several days while the floors were replaced in the Main Center and the adjoining rooms. There was no Kitty Cabana in those days, so they all, somehow, managed to squeeze into the back room along with the cam. We got to see Sesame, front and center as he found a condo near the cam and just slept and enjoyed the warmth, enjoyed the love.

About a week after coming to FFRC, Sesame started showing symptoms of a virus. Not uncommon, given what he had been through. But he didn’t seem to recover like other cats would. Jacci listened to his heart and it was apparent, this strong, courageous traveler had something wrong. His heart didn’t seem to be right. Jacci called the vet to make an appointment for the next day, but he got worse, very quickly.

He was held in the rocking chair. He was told by Jacci and others that he was so very much loved. He was told how happy everyone was that he was found, that he was here, that he was in loving arms.

When the driver of the truck opened it up, he could have just said, ‘scat’ and let him go out in the cold to fend for himself. He didn’t. The Meijers employee’s could have just called the local animal control to pick him up and put him in a cage. They didn’t. They put him in a warm box, they knew where he could go, where he would be immediately welcomed and immediately loved.

He never could tell his backstory, but the ending was very heartfelt, very moving. He was held, he was loved and on Feb. 7, 2012, just a few short weeks after being rescued from the cold, dark semi-trailer, Sesame was held in a rocking chair as he passed away, to be free to pass onto the Rainbow Bridge.

His time was short at FFRC, but the love he gave, the love he felt was enormous. Many tears were shed for him, many hearts were touched and years later, he still is in so many of our hearts.

About a month after he passed, the first Fiver Friday was held. So many people sent in $5, in memory of Sesame this cat we knew for less than a month had made his mark on us all reminding us it isn’t the amount of time you spend loving someone, it’s how deep your connection is to them. And our connection to Sesame was deep and everlasting.

And on this Friday, if you have a cat close by, give them a big hug, Sesame would like that, very, very much.

There were plenty of tears March, 19, 2012. On that Monday a dear, sweet soul said goodbye. But through the tears there were smiles. Smiles because from the day she came to FFRC until the day she left she knew love, nothing but love.

We will never know the whole story about her life before FFRC, but what we did know was heart breaking and heart churning. She came from a situation that required the police to step in and free her from her misery.

On that day, July, 25th, 2011, a Monday, she was welcomed to FFRC and freed of over 1,000 fleas that invaded and decimated her body. She was anemic, her eyes all ‘mothy’ and her skin was simply crawling with flea after flea after flea. Jacci made a promise to her that day: She would never have another flea. Never, Ever. And she never did. She was named Twinkle.

By Tuesday she was eating, purring and so loving the new home she now had. A home surrounded by love from wall to wall and through a little box on the wall.

We got to see her become a cat. We got to see her eat, gain weight and make her way around the center. It became her home. Her home forever.

It’s amazing what just a few days at FFRC can do to and for a cat. Monday there was pain, Tuesday there was healing. Even that Wednesday, our Twinkle helped to welcome another cat that was covered in fleas. She helped say “Welcome Home” to this cat that came in just two days after she did. A cat stuck between two walls and covered in fleas. Maybe some of you have heard about her. Her name is Zelda. In the span of just a few days, two very sick cats came home to FFRC.

When watching the cam you never really know what to expect. More often than not, we expect to smile. But there was one night during boxes when we all smiled and more than a few of us cried over and over. Happy tears for a moment so special, it took breaths away.

Jacci was sitting on a box giving us our daily update. Someone asked about Twinkle and she began to tell us that Twinkle was doing great and upon hearing her name, there came Twinkle right behind her, holding out her paw as if to say “you wanted me? Here I am.”

Twinkle loved to be held and petted. She loved cheese and goose eggs. Really, goose eggs! Mostly, she loved to be home. And we loved her being home.

We would see her get stronger. We would see her wounds heal and her spirit return. She would take her laps around the Center, her home. She would find a friend to cuddle with and loved when a human would find her and love on her. She loved to be loved and loved to show her love.
For Christmas, 2011, a faithful cam viewer sent a little monkey in for Twinkle. Twinkle cuddled with the monkey, her monkey.

Twinkle came from a terrible situation. We’ll never know just how bad it was, but from the moment she arrived at FFRC she knew love, nothing but love. FFRC healed her, but some damage had been done and she always had a fragility to her. In her final few weeks she became weaker and weaker. She asked to go inside to be with Jacci in her home and while the Center was only feet away, she was able to spend her final days in the loving arms or Jacci and Steve.

Her final night she spent with Jacci in her bed. She had lived too many years in a horrible environment and yet we smile because in the end, she lived her life surrounded by love.

And so on this Friday, we remember that Monday Twinkle came into our lives, into our hearts. We remember every Tuesday and Wednesday and all the days we had her with us, if only through a little box on a wall. And we don’t cry because she isn’t with us anymore, we smile because she reached though that little box and found her way into our hearts. It happened. And we are so happy because no matter how much time passes, we will always remember our sweet Twinkle. Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky.

And what a beautiful diamond our Twinkle will always be.

This final Friday in November is a Never Forget Friday, dedicated to a special cat that I never knew but loved dearly and will never forget. And I smile because every new viewer to the FFRC web cam will know his name because it is forever etched in a cabinet. They may not know just how special he was, but they’ll know his name and that makes me smile, because he made me smile. And his story always reminds me that no cat should ever be forgotten:

Sometimes we spend too much energy on trying to figure out why some people do the things they do. Our strength is better spent on taking on a challenge and simply doing what needs to be done. When those few people make decisions we just don’t understand is when we need to look deep within ourselves and simply say, “I’ll make a difference.”
The cats that come to FFRC come in for many different reasons; some do to neglect or abuse, some do to circumstances their owners cannot control, and some do to complete indifference.
One day, several years ago, a family that had a cat for 12 years took him to FFRC. Their vet had determined he had diabetes and the family told Jacci, “They didn’t want to mess with that.” So they asked her to take him. This wonderful soul was handed over without so much as a hug or pat on the head. They simply walked away.
Jacci and the volunteers could have spent their energy on anger, but instead looked into his beautiful crossed eyes and gently told him, he was now home.
His name was Tonio and he was part Siamese. He truly was a gentle soul. He never fought with anyone, never caused a fuss. He simply loved to be petted.
And when he would walk around the center, he had a certain quality about him that just gave that air of confidence. He was like Fonzie. You just would look at him and say, “That is one cool cat.”
His absolutely favorite place to sleep was in the cabinet under Magenta’s counter. He loved to just curl up in the towels and sleep for hours. We on the webcam would see the door openly slowly and we always knew Tonio was coming out for a stroll.
And when he would take his stroll, the big boy would command respect. The other cats would just back away, not because he hissed or growled, he didn’t, but because he had that air about him. “Back off, someone cool is coming through.” He was very Robert De Nero like.
As an oldster, he did require some special medical care. Sometimes he needed antibiotics or special medicine. And he was always tested to make sure his sugar levels were ok. The ironic thing is his tests with FFRC never showed he had diabetes.
He lived at FFRC for about four years and was a favorite of many of the volunteers. How could he not, he was simply a cat that never bothered anyone. He just wanted to live out his last years as we all do, without any hassles and surrounded by love.
In the fall of 2010 he began to slow down more and more. This robust boy started losing weight.
Special care and medicine was given to him to help try and maintain his weight and keep him comfortable. But he ate less and less. At the age of 16, on Sunday, November 20, 2010, Tonio said goodbye. He was held by the people who loved him, who never gave up on him, who accepted him for who he was; a kind old gentleman. His closest friends sat with him and formed a loving circle of angels as they said goodbye.
He came in surrounded by indifference and left surrounded by love.
So many of us webcammers, cried and cried when he passed. He was the kind of cat that when you saw him on cam, you just had to smile. He didn’t do goofy things; never got his head stuck in a jar, but carried himself with a certain dignity that was hard to miss. It was hard not to notice how gentle he was, he bothered no one and no one bothered him.
The cabinet that he so loved was named for him as a reminder of his favorite place and his gentle presence.
When new people join our webcam, they often ask,” Who was Tonio?” The answer is very simple: he was a special cat who needed angels and found them at FFRC. And on this Friday he is remembered, because we could never forget him and his never ending spirit.
